INTRODUCTION TO THE SECOND EDITION
Narrow Lines Extra 6 has
now been reprinted. For the benefit of new members here is a brief review.
This book was first published in 1988
and was edited by Howard Piltz with the co-operation of the publishers of Railway
Modeller. The author of the text was the late David Lloyd, then the editor of the Continental
Modeller.
The first part of the book is spent with an introduction followed by detailed
descriptions and photographs. The reminder of the book contains 18 detailed scale
drawings, printed on single-sided sheets, three of which are fold-outs on A3 paper. The
majority of the work is from the pen of the late Ian Beattie, but with others drawn by Don
Townsley, J.A.N.Emslie and by David Lloyd himself. The locos featured include
representatives of most Irish narrow gauge, including the Letterkenny & Burtonport
Extension, the Donegal, the Cork & Muskerry, the Castlederg & Victoria Bridge, the
Londonderry & Lough Swilly, the Schull & Skibereen, the West Clare, the Cork,
Blackrock & Passage and the Cavan & Leitrim. The book also includes photos and
drawings of the famous Donegal railcars, as well as the West Clare diesels.
One of the joys of
following an interest in historical narrow gauge railways is that books such as these are
timeless. Printed on good quality glossy paper with card covers, the book is presented in
loose - leaf format with a plastic slide binder permitting withdrawal of individual sheets
for use in the modelling room. For non commercial use the drawings may be photocopied to
any scale.
