NEW FOR CHRISTMAS 2008

0n30 Handbook - ISBN 978-0-9549811-2-9

Price £7-50p (plus postage)

The Association’s new ‘0n30 Handbook’ is a 68 page publication illustrated in colour throughout. It is aimed at those who want to start with Bachmann ready to run and develop their skills, but it does not deal with general railway modelling skills like wiring and baseboard building. Some of the material has already appeared in ‘Narrow Lines’ but much has been specially written and photographed.

After a foreword by Lee Riley of Bachmann and an introduction to the world of 0n30, there is an introduction to the American prototype contributed by Brian Gelineau of Virginia. Don Mason, who has acted as Editorial Adviser, has used his Beaver Creek experiences to advise how to model logging railroads in 0n30. His article includes a list of suggested sources of hardware. A description of John Green’s ‘Tuscarora Mine’ layout which was seen at Burton in 2008 confirms that 0n30 layouts do not need a large space.

The middle section of the handbook deals with ideas for locomotives and rolling stock, ranging from detailing Bachmann locomotives to scratch building logging cars and building passenger cars from laser cut wood kits. Finally, Frank Sharp and Howard Clarke remind readers how to build and install trestle bridges and Tony Woodward relates his experiences with DCC.

The Handbook is edited by Peter Page, who comments that the range of topics included from the broad spectrum of 0n30 modelling was limited by space and the availability of material. Modellers working in 0n30, especially newcomers, should nevertheless find in the Handbook a wealth of inspiration and advice.
