Prototype Corner

This page will be developed further with a series of photo montages of various narrow gauge prototypes covering, wherever possible, track and buildings as well as locomotives and stock. The photos on this page will be kept in a sub-directory, as will subsequent sets when superseded.

If any member would like to submit good quality digital photographs of any narrow gauge prototype, then please do. Submission of photographs is assumed to include authority for publication.

Any takers for modelling this prototype?

The Kingston Flyer

South Island, New Zealand

(3ft 6inch gauge)

This line is the remaining stub of the line from Gore (Dunedin to Invercargill section of the main South Island line) to Kingston, and terminates at the steamer pier in Kingston, on Lake Wakatipu. Passengers for Queenstown would disembark at the pier and catch the steamer, which also survives, and is now running sight seeing trips from Queenstown.

The compactness of the site has great potential for modelling, and the permanent way train certainly has "novelty value"! A model in 7mm scale would require a track gauge of 24.5mm, for strict prototype accuracy but in 4mm scale, the gauge is 14mm.
